Operation Chance

June 2008 - Kim Kipp, BRAFF President, announced a special program dedicated
to helping three children currently housed at Malychok orphanage in Ulan-Ude,
Russia. The children are Anna, Sasha and Kristina. All three children have physical
disabilities that impair their ability to communicate with others. Meet Anna, in the
photo below. Anna has cleft lip and palate, making it impossible for her to form
intelligible sounds.

Sasha and Kristina, in the photos below, are hearing impaired. As such, they have
not learned to speak, and communication with others is limited. Kim states, these
“... three children are at risk of being sent to the Byangol orphanage. This
orphanage is for children who are severely mentally handicapped. It is a terrible
place.” Kim continues ...Malychok Orphanage Director “Elena fears these children
will never reach their potential if they are forced to go to Byangol. Elena assures us
that they are all bright children in need of medical therapies for their physical
needs.”
Without medical intervention, these three children will be sent to an
orphanage for the severely disabled. What chance will they have once
housed there? With no access to formal education, and limited medical
intervention for orphans, they will likely never have the chance to learn
to communicate with others. What chance will they have to make it in
this world? Like all other orphans, at the age of 16, they too will have to
leave the orphanage. What chance exists for these three?

On behalf of these three children, BRAFF is asking for your help.
Please, help us provide Anna, Sasha and Kristina the chance to receive
medical care in the United States. This chance alone will greatly affect
their future. They will have the chance to go to school, instead of being
sent to Byangol. Help us give Anna, Sasha and Kristina the chance to
communicate with others, to express their desires and hopes, the
chance to learn.

Initial medical evaluations will determine what, if any, surgery can be
performed. Possibilities include surgery to repair cleft palate; hearing
evaluations; cochlear implants; and hearing aids to overcome
profound hearing loss. Below is a detailed list of the expected costs
associated with bringing these children to the United States for medical
evaluation. If you can be of assistance with any of these items, or if you
are willing to sponsor medical treatment in the U.S., please contact
BRAFF via email at
admin@braff.org. The process to travel to the US
requires an initial trip to Moscow for an interview with the US embassy.
This would include the two adult chaperones only. Assuming
everything was approved at the embassy, travel to the US could occur
three weeks later.

Moscow Visa Trip : $5,400
Covers expenses for two adult chaperones to visit the US embassy in
Moscow to apply for visas for themselves and on behalf of the three
orphaned children. Cost estimate includes Russian domestic airfare,
lodging, food, and visa application expenses.

United States Trip : $13,550
Covers expenses for two adult chaperones to accompany three
orphaned children. Includes domestic and international airfare, lodging
in Moscow, food in Moscow, and transfer between airports. Not
included in this estimate: accident/health insurance policies for all 5
visitors during their time in the U.S., or hospitalization fees for the
children, if not waived by providing hospital.
