














































10) Tanya Pervukhina Prokopheva, sponsored by the Nancy Haggerty.
Tanya reports that she continues to reside at the apartment of the civil husband’s parents. She informs that her department was
transferred from State Buryat University to Pedagogical Institute under the University and now educational building is so near to her
apartment that it takes only 5 minutes by feet to get there. She is also very happy that her best friends Masha Bogdanova and
Masha Prokopheva have moved to new dormitory that is close to her house and they may visit her more frequently when they have
time. During summer Tanya was able to come to the lake Baikal twice with her friends. She also has watched two movies at the
theatres.
In June and July she was placed with in hospital as her doctor considered necessary for her to stay quite at the hospital in order to
keep the pregnancy. The biggest change in her life is that she has given a birth to a girl on August 21. She named the baby girl as
Sonya. Her birth weigh was 4180 gr. The delivery was difficult and the girl has suffered form hypoxia and was placed for artificial
lungs ventilation for one day. In spite of big birth weight the girl was weak and pediatrician has decided to leave the girl for treatment
at the hospital for 2 weeks. Tanya has came back home from Maternity hospital with out a baby and had to visit her every day at the
hospital. Currently the baby is at home and her health is improved however she still needs special care such as massages and
some neurology treatment that makes Tanya sad and frustrated. The girl is on the breast feeding and Tanya has enough milk of her
own.
Tanya has started her studies at the end of September as Russian Law permits to young mothers to have vacations. She has no
academic debts. She is going to continue to learn as her mother-in-law will take care of the child while Tanya is at school.
She has been at Kamensk orphanage in July but children were out. She is planning to visit Children Shelter at Ulan-Ude where she
temporary resided when she was younger. She knows teaches and believes that they wil be happy to receive any help from her.
She has spent sponsoring funds for summer clothes, for household needs and food.
12) Sergey Borisovich Batudaev, sponsored by the Carlsons.
Sergey has moved to Krasnoyarsk as he was admitted to Medical University as 1st grade student. There is no opportunity
to meet with him every month. It is a requirement of BRAFF that the students meet monthly with Julia for mentoring.
BRAFF has a waiting list of orphans who would like to attend college but are unable without our aid. We will find a
qualified replacement as soon as possible- THANK YOU LYNNE AND ERIC!
11) Maria Bogdanova, sponsored by the Hoffmans.
Maria informs that she has new place of residence as her department was transferred from State Buryat University to Pedagogical
Institute under the University. That is why she has to move to different dormitory. Her new address is 45, Gagarin street, Room 507,
Dormitory #6, Ulan-Ude. She reports that for the past month she was busy with moving to new room. She and her girlfriend Masha
Prokopheva have done all repair works at the room by themselves. They don’t have refrigerator at the room and used to buy food
every day. Little food shop is not far from the dormitory and there is food kiosk as well.
Her studies have begun on August 20th. She has classes every day since 8AM till 1.30 PM and some days till 5PM. The dormitory
is near the Institute and she goes to the educational building by feet every day.
At the beginning of summer Masha was on practice at one of the offices of her University. She has helped with paperwork. Later
from 10th till 20th July she rested at the “Pike lake”. She also spent some time with her sister at Kamensk. Together they have
visited sister’s husband’s relaives at the village Shergino where they helped to prepare hay for winter. Also during summer when she
came back to town she has been at the movie theatre several times with her friends. She also has helped her friends to
refurbish their room at the dormitory #3.
She has visited Kamensky orphanage in July. She was able to communicate with teachers only as all children were at camps.
She says that she has spent sponsoring funds for buying foods and chemicals for the house. Her health continues remain good
and nothing disturbs her now. She has no boyfriend.
9)Ranshikov Kolya Nikolay, sponsored by the Hedricks.
Kolya has given a call to Julia to inform that he is sick. He was not able to come for the meeting and promised
to see Julia next month. Kim has requested of Julia that Kolya submit an update asap.
8)Badmaeva Zhargalma, sponsored by the Maggos.
Badmaeva reports that she continues to reside at the same apartment and has the same number of her cell phone. She resides
together with her boyfriend Arthur at this apartment as they were not able to find smaller apartment for cheaper rent. She has
passed all test and exams of summer finals and now she continues to study at the college. They have many lectures now and will
begin practicing beginning in October.
She says that she has spent wonderful summer as she was able to have rest at Pike Lake two times with her friends. She also has
participated at the sport competition of medical professionals two times in July and August. She has visited her village as her cousin
had a wedding. She stayed there for 3 days and was happy to be at home. She also has helped her cousin to dig up potatoes and it
took so long time because potatoes were little. When she came back to Ulan-Ude she has helped her sister to repair her
apartment. They were shopping together getting all necessary materials.
When she was at he village at Dzhidinsky region she has visited near Orphanage which is organized as a Shelter for orphan children
and located at the village Upper Burgulty. She has taken younger children with her to visit Buddhist temple. She would like to
prohibit vodka because she was so sorry to see children abandoned. Many parental right have been terminated only because
parents preferred vodka to children. They loved abusing alcohol more then they loved their children.
She has spent sponsoring funds for buying new washing machine. She also tries to save money for computer. Her main concern is
her study as she wishes to graduate with good and excellent results. It is her last year at the college.
7)Yuri Batoshireev, sponsored by the Kipps.
Yuri reports that there no significant changes in his life. His address is the same as he continues to reside at the same dormitory.
He has passed summer exams with the following results: Social science – good, Modeling of economic behavior – good, philosophy
– satisfactory, buryat language – good. He also has passed all tests except one test in Civil rights due to the sickness of the
teacher. He has to pass this test till the end of fall semester. His studies have begun on August 20 and his classes are usually from
noon till 5PM or 6.30PM.
He has spent sponsoring money for his trip to China (Manchuria) where he has bought computer. In late August he also has
purchased new curtains and rug for his room at the dormitory. At the beginning of June he has participated at Baikal Youth Forum.
He was participant of the program “Youth Tourism” and was responsible for presentation of the project “Hostels and hotels for young
people”. Two days of the forum were spent at the lake Baikal at Enkhaluk village. It was on 19th June but the weather was so cold
and it was snowing.
In July Yuri was at the village where he helped his aunts to prepare hay. From the end of July till the end of August he worked as a
Client Manager at insurance company “Finist”. He worked at the office and received clients. His salary for this month was 8000
rubles plus bonus 3000 rubles = total 11 000 rubles (366$). Together with young people delegation from Baikal Youth Forum he has
visited orphanage “Malyhsok” where they tried to make playground for children including improvements of area for biking.
His health is good. Currently he is taking special course of learning English “ABC”. He has evening classes three times per week
from 6 till 9PM. He pay 75 rubles per 1 hour. He likes this classes and the teacher so far. He tries to communicate with his
brothers but not often. Last time he spoke to them in July.
6)Olesya Gilyazova, sponsored by the Partridges.
Olesya reports that she has no changes at her residence address and electronic mail box is the same. All of her eight summer
tests have been passed un June and she has passed four exams as well: Economic theory – excellent; German language – good;
Informational science – excellent; math – good. She has no academic debts.
In July she has been at China for practicing her Chinese language and for rest. She was able to visit Baidakhe, Chinhuandao,
Harbin, Chyan-Chyun and Manchuria. She spent several days at Yellow Sea. She stayed at the apartment of her Chinese girlfriend
together with her parents. They had a lot of fun visiting different parks and fairs. Olessya has seen many beautiful places and
sightseeing. She also has got acquainted with many interesting people. She came back home on August 16 and has gone to her
village where she has helped her aunt to prepare hay. She also picked up lots of mushrooms in the forest.
During summer she has visited Zakamensky orphanage and Malyshok orphanage. She communicated with children and played with
them. She also tried to teach them how to draw. She has spent sponsoring funds for buying new clothes (pants and t-shirts),
shoes. She also spent money for food and for hairdresser as she has changed the color of her hair. Her main concern was Math
exam and she has passed it. She is happy and content now. Her health was good but recently she has got a cold. She hopes to
recover soon.
5)Elena A. Malygina, sponsored by the Brouwers.
Elena reports that she has successfully passed 8 tests and 3 exams including philosophy, biochemistry, biochemistry of milk and
meat. She also has finished professional practice that took place at five local different companies such as Buryat Bread Company,
Buryat Meat Company, Milk Company, confectionary and fish plant. After the practice was done, she has participated at repair
works of her department at the main building of Academy. Her studies have been resumed on September 1. She already knows that
she has to prepare three course works this year and there wil be 4 exams and 8 tests for winter session. In August she and her
girlfriends have been at the lake Baikal for 5 days. They stayed at little house and had to cook by themselves.
They have reached the lake by train. The weather was good and they enjoyed different activities such as biking and sliding down to
the lake. She also has visited her brother at Sosnovo-Ozersk village as he was placed with in the hospital. 3 Buryat guys have beat
him because he is Russian boy. He applied to the Court and hope to participate at the hearing soon. He feels better now. As for her
sister she continues to work as as cook at the orphanage at Eravna village.
At her free time she has met with her former classmates and they went to the forest to pick up pine cones and mushrooms. She
has preserved mushrooms for winter time. Recently Elena was at the central square of town to watch the concert performed by
Moscow artists for celebration of City Day. She is very sorry she was not able to stay late and to see fireworks as the door of her
dormitory closes at 11PM. Her health is good. He arm wrestling trainings did not start again yet. Her coach is still in the village and
she is looking forward for her call.
She did not visit her orphanage this summer as children were at the camp. She is planning to visit the orphanage in September.
Everything is good at Elena’s life. She tried to write to her sponsor Lynette Brouwer many times at brouwerl@uwstout.edu however
she never got any reply. She is kindly asking Lynnette to write her at ElenaMal90@mail.ru.
4) Tatiana Mozyarkina, sponsored by the Oberthalers.
Tanya says that nothing changed in her address and marital status. She continues to be single and reside at her girlfriend’s house.
Recently she helped her friend to refurbish the house. They have painted all walls inside and outside. She has cleaned all rugs and
washed all floors.
Her studies have begun on September 1st . She has no academic debts. She likes to learn.
In August she has spent a week at the lake Baikal and she liked this time so much. Now she and her girlfriend Nastya prepare
themselves for winter. They are busy by preserving many vegetables that they grew at the garden. Tanya is knitting warm wool
mittens and socks. AT her free time she likes to watch all new movies. Recently she has watched the movie “Point of destination 4”.
She has been at Malyshok orphanage in July. She has taken the girl Katya for entertaining at downtown for riding carrousels. She
has also been at her orphanage where she has taken care of 9 year old girl Eduarda. She has brought this girl to the Zoo. Next time
she has taken one boy and they have been at the movie theatre together.
Her health is good and she has no concerns about anything. She is very thankful to her sponsoring family for support.
3) Vera Tsarkova, sponsored by the Kipps.
Vera reports that she has no changes at the place of residence. Her health is the same and she is not married. The biggest change
in her life is that she has restored her relationships with her former boyfriend Sasha. She was the one who initiated this process and
he with his parents have visited her at her village Ivolga. He was restored at his work again at the Locomotive Plant and currently he
learns how to drive a car. Vera and Sahsa see each other frequently and together they visit his parents at the village.
Vera’s studies have begun on September 1st and currently she is the student of 3 (last) grade. There are many new subjects and
she likes it. She is not happy with academic result of the last year as she has got three satisfactory marks. However she does not
have academic debts. Most of sponsoring funds were spent for the needs of her brother who graduated Galtay Orphanage this
summer. She has bought new clothes for him and made presents to teachers. She has traveled to Galtay village to pick up him and
brought him to Ulan-Ude for summer vacations. Her brother turned 18 and they celebrated his birthday. She has prepared a present
for him as well. In late August he has gone to Muchorshibir village as he became a student of local trade school. He is learning
cooking and will be a cook after he graduates. She also spent some funds for herself as she needed to get new clothes and shoes
for fall.
Most of summer time she spent at the village Treskovo where parents of her boyfriend reside. They drove by car to the forest for
picking up berries and mushrooms. They have pick up wild black currant, strawberry and bog bilberry. All together they have traveled
to the north of the lake Baikal. Vera does not like very much her staying at the lake as the weather was cold. Also in August she
worked at summer café as a cashier. While at the north of the lake she was able to visit Bargusin orphanage and she just played
with children outside. She also has been at her orphanage three times. She has brought her clothes that she does not wear now as
she lost some weight. One time she has visited the orphanage together with her brother who stayed at this orphanage before. He
wanted to see his former teaches and give them presents. Next time she has taken one 7 year old girl to down town and they both
had fun at children fair riding different carrousels.
2) Vitaly Utenkov, sponsored by the Carlsons.
Vitaly reports that he has changed the place of residence. He and his girlfriend decided to start living together and rent an
apartment. He informs new address: Ulan-Ude, 22 Tereshkova street. His girlfriend
name is Eugenia Semyonova and she is from the same village as he. He has got acquainted with her in July while visiting his uncle
at Bichura village. She lived with her parents at the village and worked as a lawyer at local financial cooperative. Now she has moved
to town as she wished to live with Vitaly. She is a 4th grade distance learning student of one of the local Universities and she learns
jurisprudence. She is going to search for a job in town.
Vitaly repots that he has spent money for renting an apartment. The rent payment is 8000 rubles per month. He also receives
stipend from his college and usually it is 4000 rubles every month. He also works at two places as physical trainer. He works at
Sport Club “Omega” in the morning from 10 till 12. His studies are from 12.30 till 4.30PM. Every evening he works at Sport club of
Railway College from 5P till 9PM. His total monthly income is about 10 000 rubles (330$).
During summer months he lived at Sanatorium. He also visited his uncle at Bichura village several times during summer usually on
weekends. It seems to Vitaly that his uncle does not care about him as he has his own two children. He has been at the
orphanage Dom Rebenka. He was not able to speak to teachers as they were busy at the meeting. He has left DVD with cartoons
and coloring books for children. Everything seems OK so far in his life. He is happy that his girlfriend has moved to town and they
begin to live together. He is very excited and seemed to be in love with her. He thanks his sponsoring family very much as it would
be difficult for him with out this support. His health is good as he constantly lifts weights.
She was at the village through the whole summer and was not able to visit the orphanage. She has been at her orphanage in
September and has brought sweet treats for children. She also has brought her used clothes for the girls, which made them happy.
Sponsoring funds have been spent for buying computer and new clothes for summer. She also has got refrigerator and microwave
oven. Her nephew has turned 14 month and she has got a present for him too.
1) Lyubov Krasovskaya, sponsored by the Partridges:
Lyuba has reported that she has no changes in her marital status and place of residence. She remains healthy
during summer period. As for her studies she says that she resumed on September 1 and has her classes
every day from 8.30Am till 3.30 PM except weekends. She successfully passed all tests (only good and
excellent marks) of last summer finals and has the following results for her exams: Accounting – good;
Marketing – good; Economy – good.
She, her sister and nephew have spent July and August at the village. They stayed at the house of her sisters
mother-in-law. The village is not far from Ulan-Ude and it takes only 2 hours to get there by bus. Lyuba has
helped a lot about the house and garden. She helped to prepare hay for cows, picked up berries and
mushrooms in the woods and watered the garden. She liked to be in the village. Recently she came back to
the village just for two days in order to help digging up potatoes. The weather was not warm and
she has got a cold. She and her sister (both orphans) have received 450 000 rubles (15.000$) from the village
Turuntaevo where they both registered for buying a house for them. They have already purchased 3 rooms
apartment at the house for three families at this village and registered it on theirs names. The address is 18\2
Lazo street, Turuntaevo village, Pribaikalsky region, Republic of Buryatia. There are no modern conveniences
inside the house. They have to take water from the public pump and bring it to the house. The restroom is also
outside. The heating is by firewood. Lyuba is very happy to have this apartment and she plans to come and live
in this house after she graduates the college.
The HOPE Program currently has thirteen students enrolled and attending school in Russia. The students all
signed contracts at the beginning of their term clearly stating that good grades were necessary to remain in the
program; that's 13 young people who will have the support they need to complete their college education and
become independent self supporting young adults! Here's how they're doing so far this academic year:

13) Maria Prokopheva, sponsored by the Hillends.
Maria reports that she has new residence address: 45, Gagarin street, Room 507, Dormitory #6, Ulan-Ude. She has moved to
different dormitory as her department was transferred to Pedagogical Institute under Buryat State University. In June and July she
stayed at her old dormitory as she was allowed to spend summer months there. In August she moved to new dormitory where she
and her friend Masha Bogdanova have done repair works. She does not like very much new dormitory as it is not so convenient and
cozy as her last one. She does not like to take shower one time per week, because it is always busy by other students (they have
one shower room for boys and girls). The restroom and kitchen are dirty. Besides she and Mahsa have additional roommate and
they don’t like her. This is the main change in her life for the past three months.
Her studies have begun on August 20th and she is happy to have no academic debts. Usually her classes are from 8AM till 1PM or
from 12.30 till 4PM. She usually spends her sponsoring funds for living, food and household things. She continues to date with her
boyfriend and together they have watched the movies at the theatres several times. In July she has been at the kale Baikal with her
friends for several days. She also has met with her sister and brother couple of times. She also has helped her friends to refurbish
their room at the dormitory #3.
She has solved her housing problem though Court. Based on Court Decree she has been provided with 360 000 rubles (12.000$) for
buying an apartment or room. She is not happy with amount of money because it is not enough for buying any dwelling in town.
However she has to find something as she must prove to local authorities that this money was spent for housing. She has been at
Kamensky orphanage in July. She was not able to communicate with children as they were at the camp. The only concern she has
for this time is her low blood pressure. She tries to drink coffee to raise it.
